Enron Design project

The project will introduce you to the creative processes and the principles of designing a dynamic performance space for a small/ mid-scale studio theatre space for a chosen play text. Working alongside theatre specialists, with a chosen play text you will research and develop a coherent understanding of the conceptual requirements of the play. You will learn through, workshops, programmed research activities, and lectures to help contextualize the play and its relevance to a modern-day audience.

You will be designing for the Waverley Studio Theatre, a space that allows substantial flexibility for creating a dynamic performance area, accommodating up to 150 people in any formation, e.g.  Immersive, end-on, traverse, thrust, and in the round. The Play text you will be working on is – ‘Enron’ by Lucy Prebble

We started off with reading the play through as a class and having an understanding before we started to individually research and design the play. I wanted my play to be quite literal to the time period so I researched Enron at the time and the fashion, interior design, and architecture. Apart of my research was the Amazon Video Prime of Enron: The smartest guy in the room. I also watched wolf of Wallstreet as it was a similar situation with the financial crash and corruption. Once I watched these I started designing on SketchUp.

I had created a couple of designs and was unsure of what one would work the best in the performance aspect but also work the best visually to an audience. I gave background information and a description of the set design I had created and posted them to my two Instagram accounts- my personal and theatre specific to get a range of audience perspectives.

I used the outcome from this to help make my decision for the set design. Once I had my final design I would create my model. Unfortunately, my model was not created however it will be made over summer.
