Final Artifact

This skills passport module aims to show you how, while you may be studying on different pathways, there is much common ground. The skills you learn here are transferable throughout the Stage and Screen industries and will support your pathway specialisms. This module will take a blended learning approach to teach and learning, combining both face-to-face on-campus workshops and online taught sessions through MS Teams. Attendance at both on and off-campus sessions is required. Some work will need to be completed and submitted via NOW Dropbox, prior to some sessions.

I used these research images to help me with my design specifically when it came to the painting and decorating of the model such as textures and color.

The description of the house and rooms is-

"In the clean country with flowers growing everywhere," this gives me an impression of cottages that you usually find in smaller towns and villages in the countryside.

"The cottage was five miles from the station, and as the children's could not afford to do anything but walk there"

This became my inspiration for the cottage to be run down as almost as it's a fixer-upper for when they can afford to redecorate later down the line.

"they were so tired they could do nothing but drink hot milk, eat some toast, and tumble into their neatly made beds"

This is why in my model the beds are the only thing unpacked and neatly made as if the moving guys had gotten there early to set it up for the family knowing the kids would be tired.

All of these images helped me in making sure I created the correct feel and atmosphere of the model and capture the description of the family and their house in the best possible way.

Without these images, I would have created a model with inaccurate textures colors, and atmosphere.

For my artifact, I wanted to bring to life my favorite childhood book: The magical faraway tree series by Enid Blyton. It was hard choosing what scene I should create as a model. But after narrowing it down between Moon faces house in the tree or the children's rooms I decided on the children's bedrooms as there isn't an illustration for this room that would give me full control over the design process.

I work better in 3d so I created my design on sketch up to help me visualize it better and also, in the long run, it will be easier to work on the measurements for the model later on. My design was originally going to be the two girls' room, the brother's room, and the upstairs hallway with the top of the staircases. I made it in real-life scale before scaling it down 1:25. It was a basic design without the moving boxes that would fill the space. However, when I first started making this design I realized it was a lot of work to do, I decided I would rather focus on one room and make it look better than do the full design and not looking the way I want it to.

I started by creating the walls with the wallpaper and aged them before creating the exposed cobble brick walls where I cut out individual bricks and painted them before sticking them down. Next, I did the floor where I marked out floorboards on a bit of mount board painted and drew in the texture before cutting them out and arranging them in a pattern to create the flooring. Afterwards, I used skills I learnt from an early on model making lesson to create the door. Once this was done I created the large pieces of furniture, the beds and the draws covered in a dust sheet. Once these were one I moved on to smaller details such as boxes, books, webs and the rug.

Over all I am happy with the outcome of the desing and model, i think it captures the day the family have moved in before they start their journey of exploring the new country side they live in. It also captures the look of a family with not a lot of money hence the dirty old wall paper and not a lot off belonigngs. Although in the room there is a few boxes I expect these to be filled with toys and books. On the side there are 3 books out that I have designed to represrnt th actual book covers of the story, I imagine they read the books on the train from the city to the countryside thinking its just a story without realizing actually the magic faraway tree does exist and that's where they are living around the corner from. One day it will be nice to recreate this model as if the family have lived there for a while and managed to get money to renovate and redecorate but to still try and keep the cottage feel.
